126. How to Honour Your Hormones, Build Holistic Self-Awareness, and Redefine Success with Amy Lenius
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if the reason you've been struggling to stay consistent, feeling overwhelmed, or quietly burning out has nothing to do with willpower — and everything to do with how little you've been taught about yourself?
In this episode, host Serena sits down with Amy Lenius — Director of Group Coaching at Next Level University, professional speaker, and certified personal development coach — for a deeply honest conversation about what it really takes for women to redefine success on their own terms.
Amy shares her personal journey through chronic illness (endometriosis), how that led her to study women's health and holistic personal development, and why she believes the path to lasting change starts with one foundational skill: self-awareness.
What We Cover in This Episode
Amy's Origin Story
Before she ever taught this work, she lived it. Growing up with endometriosis — a hormonally-driven, chronic pain condition — Amy was pushed to understand the deep connection between her body, her environment, and her wellbeing. That knowledge became the foundation of her career in women's health and, eventually, personal development coaching.
The Holistic Lens
Everything affects everything else. Amy and Serena unpack why we can't put life into neat boxes — our relationships affect our work, our health affects how we parent, and our external environment is constantly shaping our internal one (and vice versa). This interconnectedness is the lens Amy brings to all of her coaching.
The Frustration Audit
One of Amy's most powerful tools: a simple exercise where you list everything that frustrates you — big or small, without justification. Then you sort it into two categories: what you can control, and what you can't. The things you can control become your action plan. The things you can't become your practice in emotional regulation. Amy pairs this always with a conscious gratitude practice to balance the brain's natural negativity bias.
Why Growth Doesn't Always Feel Good
Social media sells personal development as "love, light, and abundance." Amy pushes back on that — firmly. If you haven't had a hard moment yet, you probably haven't gone deep enough. The real work involves looking at core wounds, shame, guilt, and the patterns that once protected you but no longer serve you. She calls this place "lonely land" — and reassures listeners: if you're there, you're doing it right.
The Three Pillars of Success
Amy identifies three interconnected dimensions of success that must be developed together:
- Professional success — the one most of us default to
- Social success — how we show up in relationships
- Emotional success — often the most neglected, especially for high achievers
Your Cyclical Nature Is a Superpower
Amy explains that women operate on a 26–34 day hormonal cycle — not the 24-hour cycle that men experience and that most productivity systems are built around. Within that monthly cycle, women move through four distinct internal seasons:
- Inner Spring (post-period): Creativity blooms, energy builds — ideal for brainstorming and creative work
- Inner Summer (ovulation): Peak social energy, articulation, and communication — great for podcasts, presentations, and difficult conversations
- Inner Fall (pre-menstrual): Detail-oriented and environment-focused — use this time for organisation and focused, analytical work
- Inner Winter (menstruation): A natural inward turn — honour the need to slow down and restore
What Success Really Means
For Amy, success isn't a title or a number. It's abundance — the freedom to say yes to what aligns and no to what doesn't. It looks different for everyone, but the feeling of success — clarity, fulfilment, certainty — is remarkably consistent.

Meet Amy Lennius And Her Work
SPEAKER_02My guest today is Amy Linius. Amy is the director of group coaching at Next Level University. Amy helps women redefine success in a way that feels deeply aligned through clarity, self-belief, emotional resilience, self-worth, and sustainable daily habits. Welcome, Amy, to the Quiet Warrior Podcast.
SPEAKER_00Hi, I'm so excited to be here. Thank you so much for having me.
SPEAKER_02Thank you,
Lived Experience Into Coaching
SPEAKER_02Amy. You know, the first thing I noticed about your bio was this line. Before I ever taught this work, I lived it. Can you tell us more about your journey and how it's led you to what you do now?
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely. So, I mean, the work in specific that we can just lay a framework and groundwork of is self-belief, self-worth, and the ability to be consistent. And even not only can I see that in my own journey and where the self-belief was high, the self-worth was low, I couldn't be consistent versus where I could. Again, just living those experiences and seeing it back, hindsight's always 2020. But the how much I see it in others, what I see in my coaching and in our group coaching, and even in all the free things we offer, you will always meet the level of these three things. And when I look back, I actually really love that I can look back on my struggles that I had, not only with my health, my mental emotional journey, my growth journey, my success journey. As difficult as some of those moments were, I love that I can look back and share my experience with others to help them see that in themselves when they are struggling in those ways as
Endometriosis And Women’s Wellness
SPEAKER_00well. And so I my way back journey, I don't know how far back we want to go, but I grew up with chronic illness and I was very sick. And that all had to do with female health. I had a condition, have a condition called endometriosis. It's very hormonally driven, uh, chronic inflammation, chronic pain, lots of different things. Not so fun. Not so fun. And that led me on a journey of, you know, choosing anatomy and physiology in my background, as well as all of the knowledge that I accumulated to heal and become pain-free from this condition, led me into speaking into other women's lives and teaching them about their bodies and their cyclical nature and how we just have no idea. We're never taught in school that our bodies are on this clock, this calendar, this cycle. And it's about so much more than just a few days of the month and how I learned to heal and leverage those myself. I started speaking. That's where my public speaking career started was in natural wellness for women's health. And then it just kind of kept growing from there. I started my own program and I was working with Kevin and Allen at Next Level University, who I currently partner with. And they were on a mission of holistic self-improvement and success, holistic personal development for the sake of your success. And I was drawn in because I love that word. That word embodies my entire journey, holistic, how everything affects everything else.
Holistic Growth Without Boxes
SPEAKER_00We love to try and segregate things, and we also hate when we're put in boxes. It's a weird human thing that we do. But we can't. We can't put things into boxes. They all affect everything else. Your relationships affect your career. Your career affects the way you parent. It's they all come together. Your health, that's where I really fell in love with it. I needed to understand that my external environment really affected my internal environment and vice versa, and how they all work together. So I fell in love with that word holistic. And here were these two guys talking about holistic growth and holistic self-improvement, how your health, your wealth, your quality of life, your love all intertwined together and how we can be successful in all of them. And I was so excited. So I just started following everything that they do. I started working with them. And then I sent my keynote speech one day to Alan and he loved it and asked if I would come MC for them and their live event down in the States. I'm up in Canada. And so I did that and it just exploded from there. I now have my own coaching program through next level university. I facilitate group coaching, and that's something the three of us get to do together. So that's one of my favorite things where the three of us can come together in our genius zones and support a group of people. And we do book clubs and monthly masterclasses. We get to do a lot of wonderful things where that I feel like I was very not only supported, but celebrated in bringing what I had to offer to this company that these two dudes have put together. And celebrated and brought in so much that I felt like I was still able to keep who I am and grow within this space and still bring women's health and all the things that I loved before this, that I can now add into personal development and success. And it's just been a wonderful partnership. And that's currently where I'm at.
SPEAKER_02It's an amazing journey. I love the way you have allowed your lived experience to shape the next part of your growth, your mission, and then how you've landed this serendipitous opportunity where you can focus on your genius zone, and that's helping women in a holistic way. You're right, because we do humanly have a tendency to, you know, we want things to be neat, to be nicely boxed away. I don't want to deal with this thing right now. Let me just focus on this one thing. But then it's all spilling into each other. There is a ripple effect, and everything affects everything else. And you said the external environment shapes your internal one, and vice versa. Talk to us more about that. How are you helping women with how each environment shapes the other?
Stress Loops And The Frustration Audit
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we can take it with probably the one that is the most relatable is stress. What in your external environment is causing you stress that you may not have tapped into yet, and then recognizing what that does to you internally, and then how that is feeding back out into your external results. And so being able to identify what in your life is stressful, is out of alignment, is overextending you, whatever stress is current to you, teaching them how to recognize that, how to label it, how to deal with it. One of my favorite exercises to give people actually is called a frustration audit. I want to give people so much permission, and it's hard for them to do. So I give them so much permission, big, little, doesn't matter. Anything that you feel frustrated about, I want you to put it on a list. And I don't want you to justify why it shouldn't be on there. Oh, here's this thing, this dish is always out. That's so little, though. I don't need to put that on the list. No, if it frustrates you, it's on the list. And then we get to go through the list and say, what do I have control over and what do I not have control over? Separate into those two categories the things I don't have control over, how can I mentally and emotionally learn to deal with that better? And the things I do have control over, how can I start taking small sustainable action to start making these more aligned and less frustrating?
SPEAKER_01How does that tie in with the stress management techniques that most people talk about?
SPEAKER_00I really prime people's brain to say, okay, this needs to be balanced out with gratitude. Because the second you start priming your RAS, that reticular activating system in your brain to start noticing things that tick you off, it's going to really start to pay attention and you're going to start to feel actually really frustrated. So we need to make sure that we're consciously aware of that and to balance it out with gratitude. Okay. We need to, while we're doing this frustration audit, because some people take a good long while to do it, but now that's priming your brain for frustration. So how can we balance this out with conscious awareness that this is an exercise I'm doing to relieve frustration? While also where can I see gratitude along the way and make sure I'm writing those down?
SPEAKER_02I see this as an answer to my earlier question about your, you know, the relationship between the internal and the external. So you're looking at the external to say, what do I have control over and what don't I? So that's looking at the bigger picture. And at the same time, you're looking at gratitude, which is that internal work. Because there are times where we can struggle to find something to be grateful for. And we we all have those dark valleys where you know, when you're walking in the midst of it and it's really messy, it's like there's nothing to be thankful for. So that really is a deep internal work. And you say that growth doesn't always feel good.
Why Growth Feels Uncomfortable
SPEAKER_02So why do you believe that discomfort is part of the path to success?
SPEAKER_00Oh, because all of the good things are actually in discomfort. When you see things, especially online, we have so much access to so much information and so many people's perspectives and things online. And when they say, Oh, personal development, personal growth is so monumental. I'm in momentum all the time. It's all love, light, and abundance. No, it is not. And if you haven't had a hard moment yet, I guarantee you're not going deep enough. You're not looking at the areas that actually cause pain in your life. Because those are hard to look at, but they're the most important because the things that are attributed to you, your beliefs, your values, your actions, and things that are not in alignment the life you want to have, that's hard to look at because there can be shame, there can be guilt, there can be you're poking at core wounds, you're it's it's tough. But that work, when you start to recognize those patterns and start interrupting those patterns in a more aligned way that is optimal for the goals and the success and the version of life that you want to have, that's when you actually see more change. And so I encourage people always that if you're really struggling some days with the personal development journey, it actually doesn't mean that it's not for you. It doesn't mean that you're doing something wrong. If anything, you're probably skirting around a path that is something really important for you to look at. And it's important to know that other people are doing that as well and that that work is worth it. You're not alone in that, you're not doing something wrong per se, because you're having these feelings of shame, guilt, inadequacy. It's there's so many things in there. We call it lonely land, actually, because it can get really lonely even when you're surrounded by people to dive into these deeper spaces. But everyone goes through it on this journey if they're doing it right and if they're doing it long enough to hit these moments. And it is a really valuable space to be. And so if you're in that, I just encourage you to find other people who are doing that work as well to validate you in the struggle that actually is real personal development and growth and go from there.
SPEAKER_02And to expand on what you said, Amy, I think also when you're on the personal development path, you do stir up a lot of stuff. You do go into those very deep places, which most of us really don't want to. Revisiting old, you know, core wounds as you describe them is painful. It brings up all this strong emotion, and like you say, those those feelings of guilt and shame, and they do need to be attended to. I see them as, in a sense, not as so much a red flag as a call for help.
SPEAKER_01It's telling you that I'm here and this is something you need to look at.
SPEAKER_02And you know, we need to I think have the courage and the support as well from like-minded people, um, people with similar values, and people who care enough and can hold space for you to go down that down that hole and investigate and heal what needs to be healed and see what needs to be seen. Because it's easy to move on from there and just cover it up and you know, let's let me get on with my life and yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Suppress, suppress, suppress. No, don't look at that, don't let that bother you. No, it is bothering you somehow, even on an unconscious level. And so, yeah, if you can have someone guide you through that and tell you that it is just so normal to have these things come up and and to have these these triggers and core wounds, and to also empower you with the information that those things are actually there for a reason. They're there because at some point you needed them to be, to be protected mentally, physically, emotionally. They're protectors, actually. And so when you can come at it from that lens and really start to heal, hey, I don't need protection from this anymore. You're actually doing more harm than good now. How can we start to work together?
SPEAKER_02Yes. So it's a collaborative exercise. It's not about pushing away, it's not about suppressing or hiding or feeling ashamed. It's actually bringing all that out and looking at it honestly. And I think that takes courage more than anything else.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it does. It takes a lot of courage, it takes a lot of humility too for certain personality types. It's it's a humility aspect that they have to learn to let go of. Oh, I'm fine, or I'm this, this, this, and this, I'm actually not. And to have some accurate self-awareness and to be able to look into that and see it as valuable. Um, so yeah, courage for some personality types, humility for others.
SPEAKER_02And I find that with people who are high functioning, who are very accustomed to doing things well at a very high level of excellence, sometimes they do have difficulty admitting that there are parts of themselves that need that extra support and that tender loving care.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, very much so. Especially if you are very proficient in like professional success. But there's also social success and there's emotional success as well. There's three really important pillars there. And if you can start to grow all three, that's amazing. But if you're really heavy into one, sometimes you tend to struggle with the others. Yet they're all really, really important to cultivate and grow together.
SPEAKER_02What were those three again? Social, emotional, and professional. Professional success. So those are your three pillars, right?
Success Across Three Pillars
SPEAKER_02So my next question for you has to do with something you mentioned at the start about cycles, honoring your cyclical nature for women. What does that mean? And how does that change the way we set goals?
SPEAKER_00Let's bring it
Women’s Cycles And Hormones
SPEAKER_00in from we were just talking about stress externally and internally. So if you have this stress externally in people, places, whatever's causing you stress and a little frustration on it, internally, that is messing up your hormones. So not only is it hard mentally and emotionally, it creates this feedback loop that makes it extra hard because it's tanking one of your really important female hormones, which is progesterone. Progesterone is a natural anti-anxiety, helps you create an aligned environment. It really actually helps you see what isn't aligned in your environment and how to get there. It helps you organize its, but the anti-anxiety effect is really, really important for progesterone. And that's what happens right before your period. You get this big arc of progesterone that's supposed to come in, but a lot of women don't get that big arc of progesterone for so many reasons. A lot of it is external environment. We are not set up for success to support this big arc, this big flood of progesterone that needs to come in. So we actually really struggle in that weak, week and a bit before our periods, not only with our periods, but that pre-MS stereotypical stage. That's where we struggle. Because when we have high cortisol, when we have high stress hormone, we're not meant to sustain that. We're not meant to stay there. We are fight or flight kind of beings. And then we're meant to go back into what's called homeostasis, our natural state of being in balance. We're supposed to run from the bear, find safety, tell someone about it, and then okay, I'm safe. But we don't. And our bodies, our brains treat everything like we're being chased by the bear. The response is the same. And we're constantly living in this state of fight or flight or freeze or fun. There's four. But for the sake of simplicity, so we're constantly flooded with our cortisol, but our body's not meant to do that. It's supposed to be a big flood and then ah, okay, we can go back. But we're living in these states of high consistent cortisol. So what our body does is, oh, we need more. We need more because we're still unsafe. Well, here's this hormone progesterone. I can just convert that into more cortisol. So that's no problem. We'll just tank your progesterone and convert more cortisol. And now, not only do you not get the benefits of the progesterone, and you're going to see that in your PMS and in your cycle, in your period, you're going to feel more stressed. And then eventually you're going to have adrenal fatigue and tank. So it's a very vicious cycle that women get into. And that's just stress right there. That's that internal, external. And that's how we can be really aware one way of our cycle. But let's just say we have a natural, healthy cycle. It's about 26 to 34 days long, depending on the woman. You within that cycle have four seasons. So men have a 24-hour hormone cycle. Men are like the sun, up and down every day, same. Women have that 24 hours stretched out over those 26 to 34 days. So we're actually mentally, emotionally, and physically slightly different every day, just like the moon. And we're very noticeably different week to week to week.
Four Inner Seasons For Goal Setting
SPEAKER_00And it is amazing when you can understand how you show up in those weeks and how to work with that natural cycle versus against it. You you literally go through an internal winter, spring, summer, and fall. And the energy and the embodiment of those seasons is literally happening within you. In inner spring, it's when your period just ends. And you literally feel like you're coming back to life. Things feel more creative, they feel more abundant. If you have creative work to do, maybe you're a digital designer or whatever it is, anything that's going to be creative, you are more primed for creativity during that time. This is just one example. So if you can leverage that time and use your brain in that way, amazing. Next is inner summer. That's when you're ovulating. You are more physically, mentally, and emotionally set up for social interactions, for communication. So even on podcasts like this, this is where understanding my inner seasons comes in. When I'm ovulating and when I'm in that inner summer season, I am great on podcasts. I'm more articulate. I have just better cognitive ability for interactions and articulations and big words. I don't mess up as much. And then I come into inner fall and that actually starts to go away a little bit because I'm not set up for success to be as front-facing, as interactive, feeling myself even. I feel less confident about myself in that season, which is very natural for women as well. And so I have to understand that I'm not going to not go on podcasts during that season because it's something I'm committed to doing, but I give myself this grace. Hey, last week I absolutely crushed this podcast. This week might look a little bit different. I might have to ask you to repeat a question, and that's okay. I might mess up my words a little bit, and that's okay. Because right now I'm actually into fall and I'm starting to prepare for hibernation. I want my environment to be more set up for success because I'm about to go into winter. And so this is when we can get really nitpicky about our environment. Now that's not PMS making you a jerk. That's actually you're primed for making sure the people, places, and things around you are set up for success. And so when we need to be organized in our work, let's say, that's a really great time to get some organization done because you can get some really focused work done in that time. And then inner winter comes, that's when your period starts. And you feel like winter, you want to be internal, you want to hibernate a little bit. Things want to be a little bit slower. And so again, we can't all hibernate. We have jobs, we have kids, we have all these things, but the mental capacity and the emotional awareness can be different. Hey, I don't have the energy to have the output or to give the output that I did a couple weeks ago. So I'm going to come in with this energy and understanding and grace instead of shame to this thing that I'm bringing. And so I work with a lot of women who are like, oh my gosh, I was so consistent with my habits, with my workouts last week, my diet, everything. It was amazing. The next week, I sucked. I sucked so hard. I was, I struggled to be consistent. I really didn't push myself in my workouts, and I struggled to stay on my diet. That is so normal. That is not something that is wrong with you. And the gift I can give women is to teach them why that's happening and how to leverage that in an aligned way. Yes, you fed into your cravings. PMS, your body wants more glucose. It wants more carbs. It's going into a heavy energy output. You are naturally primed to do that. How can we honor that without messing up your goals? Amazing. Yes, you are not as primed to be consistent and your output, your workouts during ovulation, during inner spring and inner summer should be harder and you can push yourself more. Inner fallen in the winter, it's actually more to a detriment. So let's slow it down and give you different. Workouts, so you're still honoring your body with movement, but it's not to a detriment to your mental, emotional, and physical state. It is a superpower that women can tap into to understand their seasons. And I highly recommend that you do.
SPEAKER_02You know, I feel like the last 10 minutes where you've been expanding on this subject of hormones and cyclical nature and how we show up differently in every season, is inspiring this collective sigh of relief from our listeners.
SPEAKER_00I think every time I get to talk about it even.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, some people may be hearing this for the first time and feeling so reassured, so relieved that they are tuning into this particular episode and listening to you, Amy, talking about this. Because you're so right. I think just even that simple distinction between how men operate, you know, men are like the sun, women are like the moon, and our cycles flow differently. And this is how you adjust, this is how you strategize around your cycle, so then you don't have that guilt. You don't feel, oh, what's wrong with me? You know, I'm so unmotivated, I'm so lazy, I'm, you know, I'm I'm lacking discipline. All the things we say to ourselves, and that sometimes experts say to people who are going through these seasons, it's without that understanding, without that added layer of awareness that we are very different fundamentally. So thank you for highlighting all that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, thank you for letting me talk about it. I mean, you heard how long of a rant I could go on. I can keep going. It's such a important topic that, again, I think is more talked about than ever, but I still constantly come across women who have never heard that about their own bodies. And so it is so important to learn about you. That is the most important thing you can do: self-awareness mentally, physically, and emotionally on any journey you are on, even if it is just this journey that is life, knowing what you are about is so valuable.
Defining Success And Self-Awareness
SPEAKER_02What does success mean to you, Amy? And how did you come to define it that way?
SPEAKER_00Ah, to me, what does success mean to me? Success means it means abundance in a way that I can say yes to the things that I want to say yes to and no to the things that I don't. That to me feels like success. Now, I deeply believe success is subjective in how that looks. People are on like health journeys, that's their version of success right now. People are on wealth journeys, relationship journeys. There's so much that can be embodied in success, but I think a lot of the feelings of success are very similar. It's a lot of fulfillment, clarity, certainty, those types of things. And so to me, yeah, it's just living in abundance, not just financially, but love, health, wealth, and my my dearest loved ones in the same boat.
SPEAKER_02And what is the one thing that you want listeners to take away from today's conversation?
SPEAKER_00It is that self-awareness piece. We talked about internal, external, how that deep dive is really challenging, but so important. That's all a part of self-awareness. That's a part of mental, emotional awareness. That's a part of understanding your triggers and having them not control you anymore, but you control them and how they come out and how it is seen and perceived in the world versus you reacting unconsciously from this wounded space. It's you understanding what that is, why that is, why you say, think, do, believe the things that you do. And then there's that physical component as well, right? Understanding your cyclical nature, understanding how your gut health works, even is just such a valuable piece of being a human. So learn about you in as much, I mean, capacity, capability as you can. And again, there's so many incredible free resources out there to do so. I deeply believe it's important to invest in yourself. And I think when people hear me say that, they think monetary. And again, if you can swing that, off for sure, do it. Invest in the coach that's going to help you do those deep dives, the therapist, the health coach, the whatever that looks like. If you can do that, do that. But if you are not at that place yet, not only do typically these people have free offerings regularly, there's stuff like this. There's free podcasts out in the world that you can listen to and invest. This is an investment in yourself right now. Listening to this. It doesn't have to be this big monetary epic thing. It can be something like this every day where you're pouring a little bit of self-awareness, a little bit of learning into yourself, and then implementing it at home. So self-awareness, learn about you, how you navigate the world. And is that the way you want it to be? Or is it tripping you up a little bit and getting in the way of your success, your version of success? And then learning about it is going to help you mitigate that and start driving yourself in a better way.
SPEAKER_02I love that. I love that reminder that each of us is important enough and deserving enough to put a little time towards that self-nourishment, feed your soul, do something lovely for yourself each day, give yourself grace, spend time celebrating yourself and learning because you deserve to know what makes you thrive, what makes you happy, what energizes you. And we can't do that without a full tank. We can't do that just scraping, you know, for bits at the bottom of the barrel and trying to get by on that. A lot of us are, I think, running on fumes at the moment. And I think this episode, this conversation with you, Amy, is so timely. We need to top up that tank in the healthiest way possible. And the way to start is by knowing more about how we ourselves function because each of us is so different.
Where To Connect And Final CTA
SPEAKER_02So, how can people connect with you and find out more about your work?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I'm I mean, Instagram and Facebook are probably the easiest one. It's just at Amy Lennius, and you can DM me anytime. And it's me in my messages, messaging you back and connecting with you. And I love connecting with people who just want to have a conversation, learn more, ask questions, or even just express their frustrations and need them to be heard somewhere. I'm happy to be that ear. So thank you. Fantastic.
SPEAKER_02Well, make sure to have your links in the show notes so people can reach out. So thank you so much, Amy, for sharing your wisdom and your time and your energy with us today to remind us that we are important enough to be to start cultivating that self-awareness of how we are different, to honor our cyclical natures, to recognize the seasons and work around them instead of against them. And to do all the little things that feed us socially, emotionally, and professionally so that successes can be holistic. Thank you. If you're ready to be seen without having to perform extroversion, the Visible Introvert Academy is your next step. Be seen and build influence without pretending to be who you're not. The link is in the show notes. See you in the next episode. I'm so grateful that you're here today.
